A Testimonial to Professor Mikyo Riggs from Antone Haley

In The Book of Five Rings Miyamoto Musashi, one of the finest warriors to ever walk the planet, advises the reader to “make your fighting stance your everyday stance and make your everyday stance your fighting stance.” On the surface this advice may seem only pragmatic. As a warrior, after all, one should be prepared to move, to defend, and to attack at all times. It is only upon closer examination that it becomes evident Musashi was suggesting something much deeper. When Musashi advises to make your fighting stance and your everyday stance one in the same he is actually encouraging the reader to fully embody their perspective Art. Musahsi is calling upon you to not just be a Martial Artist while you are in the Dojo, but also at every instant throughout your day. There should be no separation between who you are and what you do as a Martial Artist. It is in this fashion that you make your everyday stance and your fighting stance the same; by embodying both the movements and the principles of your Art until there is no longer a distinction between yourself and your practice.

Throughout my long Martial Arts career I have met all sorts of Martial practitioners. I have met humble masters and formidable fighters, as well as a long list of fakes, phonies, and charlatans. It hasn’t been more than two or three times that I have met a man who didn’t just practice his Art but lived it as well. Mikyo Riggs is one of those men. Who Mikyo is cannot be separated from what he does. Mikyo is a man who embodies the Martial path at every instant, both day and night, and it is with great focus, discipline, respect and loyalty that he makes his everyday stance his fighting stance.

While Mikyo’s Martial skills are world-class in every sense, his most notable and impressive characteristics lay in his ability to pass his Art to others. Mikyo is simply the very best instructor I have ever met. Time and time again I have seen Mikyo make champions from people who never thought they had it in them. Any coach can make a world-champion from an elite-level athlete. Mikyo can make a world-champion out of anyone.

I have trained and taught Martial arts in over a dozen countries. I have instructed thousands of students from everyday people all the way to elite government units, and I have fought in the last no-holds-barred arena left in the United States. If I had the option of being anywhere it would be right next to Mikyo Riggs at Marin MMA. Should you be given the opportunity I would implore you to pay him a visit. With Mikyo as your instructor you will always walk out of the academy better than when you walked in.
