Marin MMA History

Marin Mixed Martial Arts opened its doors in San Anselmo, California in 2006. Upon opening, MarinMMA quickly changed the Gracie Jiu Jitsu landscape in Marin County, as well as throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

To know the history of MarinMMA is to understand the martial arts career and vision of its founder Mikyo Riggs. Mikyo Riggs began his Martial Arts career in 1990 and quickly realized that Martial arts was going to be a way of life for him. He earned his first Black belt in a freestyle Martial Art when the world of Mixed Martial Arts was still in its infancy. He went on to immerse himself in multiple styles such as; boxing, Muay Thai, MMA, Enshin Karate, and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, eventually earning his black belt from one of the toughest Jiu-Jitsu academies in the world.

Mikyo soon realized that winning competitions, while rewarding, was not all that he longed for. He wanted to pass on his knowledge and allow others to realize how mentally and physically rewarding Martial Arts can be, so he opened his own school – MarinMMA.

MarinMMA was founded with the idea that it would provide the highest quality training, but it had to be much more than that. It was a fundamental goal of MarinMMA to enrich all aspects of the student’s life and provide the sense of family that is rarely found in business. Mikyo has truly brought that vision to life.

Since MarinMMA’s opening, it has positively affected the lives of thousands of people in Marin, and many students have dominated in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA competitions.
