Frequently Asked Questions about Marin Mixed Martial Arts

What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and other Martial Arts?

All Martial Arts have their redeeming qualities; it is simply the underlying principle that makes each art different. Jiu-jitsu is primarily practiced as a martial art where a smaller person can subdue a much larger opponent through leverage and positional control rather than relying strikes that could cause unnecessary harm to the attacker or be ineffective against a larger opponent.  Once an advantageous position is obtained, the Jiu-Jitsu practitioner can either continue to hold the attacker until help arrives or use a choke or joint-lock technique to further incapacitate their opponent.

If your goal is to become a fighter or to be able to defend yourself completely, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu has significant advantages over most other martial arts. It remains the only single style that addresses all areas of fighting completely without the need for cross-training. Styles like Boxing, Karate, Kung Fu and Tae Kwon Do all specialize in striking an attacker and rarely address some of the worst-case scenarios common in self-defense situations, like being pinned on the ground.  Jiu-jitsu offers solutions for defending against striking and grappling attacks for both standing and ground situations. With the popularity of contests like the Ultimate Fighting Championship, you will see people naming their styles as Wrestling or Kickboxing, but they all (and must) supplement their training with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. To this day, there are still fighters entering the cage with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as their only method of training to ensure their victory.

How old do kids need to be to start at MarinMMA?

Kids can start training at the age of 3 in the Lions Cubs class. We will evaluate children to make sure they are mature enough to begin enrolling in martial arts classes.

Do I need to be in shape for this?

No, you do not need to be in shape when you start, because each person advances through the program at their own pace. Over time you will become physically conditioned because Mixed Martial Arts involves a vigorous workout that includes aerobic, plyometric and isometric exercises, which will develop your strength and stamina.

Am I too old to train?

No, there is no age limit for training at Marin MMA. Every person is welcome at the studio and we respect and encourage every student to go at their own pace. Training martial arts is a life time practice that allows each student to reach their full potential.  Our Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are suitable for all levels and ages, but some students prefer to start with Private Lessons before entering a group class.

Do I have to compete?

Competing is encouraged but not required. We have many resources to assist students in entering martial arts competitions and our competitors frequently win both local and international tournaments. However, we understand that competition is not for everyone and will not force you to compete. Competition is good for martial artists because it allows a practitioner to test their skills in realistic, intense combat situations within an organized event kept safe via rules and officials. Hence while we encourage people to compete to test their MMA and Jiu-Jitsu skills, we understand that some students are not interested in competition and there is no pressure to compete.

Do I need to have prior experience?

No, we have beginning classes that introduce students with no experience to the fundamentals of Mixed Martial Arts. However, before you train, you should consult your physician to make sure you are fit for Martial Arts practice.

I want to lose weight, can your program help me?

Absolutely. Mixed Martial Arts is a total body workout that includes cardio activities, which will help you lose weight, and plyometrics, which will improve strength and muscle tone.

What are some of the benefits of Mixed Martial Arts?

Mixed Martial Arts is a life changing experience. A few of the benefits are: self-defense skills, weight loss, increased strength, improved self-discipline, mental toughness, stress-relief, high self-esteem, increased energy, healthier diet and lifestyle, feeling connected to a community of healthy individuals, building friendships, mental focus, and increasing confidence.

What sort of equipment do I need?

You don’t need any gear to start your Free Trial!  Once you are a member, training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu requires a uniform, called a “Gi,” and a belt, while Kickboxing will require gloves, shin guards, a mouth guard, and a Marin MMA T-Shirt worn as the uniform for class.  Equipment for classes is available for purchase at Marin MMA.

It is important to wear the recommended gear for each class to keep yourself and other students safe.  The Jiu-Jitsu gi is made out of a specially weaved cotton material that will be able to withstand the rigorous practice of Jiu-jitsu without immediately tearing. Your gi should be washed after every class.

For Kickboxing, the Marin MMA T-Shirt should be worn to every class.  It is the uniform for the class.  Extra shirts are available for purchase at the front desk.

Why train with a Gi?

As you practice Jiu-jitsu, you will find it useful as both an offensive and defensive tool; you will also realize its value as a common uniform to promote safe and technical practice of Jiu-jitsu. Additionally, taking away the gi allows physical attributes such as size strength and slipperiness to come to play with greater effect due to the lack of levers and friction. Working with the gi is generally considered more of a ‘thinking man’s’ game because the gi removes many physical advantages and adds more techniques.

For now, you should view your gi as a set of training wheels. As you develop a higher level of proficiency, you will learn to perform Jiu-jitsu techniques both with and without a gi. For now, the gi will add a level of sophistication to your game that will result in you as a student becoming a more advanced and technical fighter.
